The Preview Review : “Raman Raghav 2.0”

There is an oral code in Bollywood which states that any movie bearing Nawazuddin Siddique’s name in the acting credits, has to be watched at least once. Also add to it names like Anurag Kashyap and his production house Phantom Films, and we have a recipe for a really good movie. The trailer for the movie in question, Raman Raghav 2.0 came out few days ago and it immediately got decent press. Based on the true story of the eponymous serial killer who terrorised Mumbai pavement and hutment dwellers in the 1960s, the trailer also features the impressive Vicky Kaushal in the role of a police officer.

This is not the first time that the story of this “casual murderer” has garnered attention. Sriram Raghavan had helmed a short film on the subject with Raghuvir Yadav earlier. But going by the look of the trailer, we are sure that Raman Raghav 2.0 will unfurl few dark secrets of this cold blooded killer. Nawazuddin plays the lead and in the 3 minutes and 22 seconds length of the trailer, he sends shivers down our spine with his acting. There are 2 brief scenes in the trailer, one right at the outset and the other at the end, where Nawazuddin displays his acting chops to the fullest, for us mere mortals to watch in awe! Matching him will be a herculean task for the relative newbie Vicky Kaushal, but if his impressive audition in one of the best movies of 2015, Masaan, was anything to go by, we are in for a spectacular face off. Cop versus killer, mayhem versus madness, acting powerhouse versus new kid in the block, this movie looks deliciously inviting!

Reports suggest that Nawaz went through bit of mental trauma playing the taxing role of a motiveless killer. Goes to show the depths to which this guy goes for projecting his characters with honesty. Anurag Kashyap recently tasted rare failure with Bombay Velvet and we are sure he wants some sort of redemption with this one.

Phantom Films have created a respectable filmography of their own with genre specific flicks like the historical romance Lootera, the neo-noir Ugly, the National Award winning Queen and we trust them to serve the audience with something powerful with Raman Raghav 2.0.
